Estimated total: about 20 minutes to wash, peel, cut and measure; about 10 minutes of active stovetop cooking, roughly 5 minutes to bring the broth to a boil and 20 to 25 minutes of simmering. The active time is about 30 minutes. Sweet potato size and stove heat can change the simmer time; check a cube for tenderness.
Durations are taken from the method and may overlap. Some preparation steps are not timed. Optional stages are separate from the main meal.
Wash the sweet potatoes and pepper. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into even 1.5 cm cubes. Dice the onion and seeded pepper, and chop the garlic. Drain and rinse the ready-cooked black beans; keep them separate until the sweet potatoes are nearly tender.
Warm the olive oil in a large heavy pot over medium heat. Add the onion and red pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 6 to 8 minutes, until softened. Add the garlic, smoked paprika, cumin and mild chili powder; stir for about 1 minute until fragrant, without letting the spices scorch.
Add the sweet potato cubes, diced tomatoes and their juices, vegetable broth and measured salt. Stir, bring to a boil, then lower the heat to a gentle simmer. Partly cover and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until a sweet potato cube is almost tender when pierced with a fork.
Stir in the drained black beans and simmer uncovered for another 5 minutes, until the beans are hot and the sweet potatoes are fully tender but still hold their shape. If the soup is thicker than you like, add a little water and return it to a simmer. Taste before adding any more salt.
Turn off the heat and stir in the 2 tablespoons lime juice. Divide into six bowls. Add the optional cilantro and offer lime wedges so each person can brighten their bowl to taste.
For leftovers, transfer the soup to shallow containers and refrigerate promptly, within 2 hours. Use within 2 to 3 days or freeze for later use. Thaw frozen soup in the refrigerator. Reheat soup to a full rolling boil while stirring, and check that it reaches 74°C (165°F) with a food thermometer; discard any reheated portion that is not eaten.
No. This is deliberately chunky. Cut the sweet potatoes evenly and cook them just until tender so the cubes stay distinct beside the whole beans.
The measured mild chili powder adds gentle warmth, while smoked paprika supplies the smoky flavour. Chili powder blends vary, so check your jar and use less if you prefer.
Yes. Use about 650 g fully cooked black beans in place of the two drained cans. This soup does not provide enough cooking time for uncooked dry beans.
Yes. Chill it in shallow containers within 2 hours, then use it within 2 to 3 days or freeze it. The broth may thicken as it stands; add a splash of water during reheating if needed.
This soup keeps the sweet potato in distinct cubes and uses two cans of black beans, tomato, red pepper, smoked paprika and lime. The lentil soup uses dried lentils, spinach, mild curry and coconut milk.

Recipe source: Adapted from American Sweet Potato Marketing Institute: Creamy Chipotle-Lime Sweet Potato & Black Bean Soup. This version keeps the sweet potatoes in cubes instead of puréeing them, adds red pepper and diced tomato, doubles the cooked beans for six bowls, and omits the source’s coconut milk or yogurt. It increases the smoked paprika to 1.5 teaspoons and uses mild chili powder in place of chipotle powder. Estimated timing has not been kitchen-tested by the Tasty Recipes team.
